A guitarist for 40+ years, Ira was once at the helm of the Guitar Department at the Sam Ash Music store in Forest Hills, New York. A player of both electric and acoustic guitars, Ira’s main axe is his 1963 Gibson SG Special, which he likes to play with “just a touch of ‘verb and delay.” When not setting up his own instruments to his liking, Ira is busy perfecting his skills as a close-up magician and actor. Matthew has been a performer for over half his life. He began singing in his elementary school chorus at 8 years old, eventually being invited to perform with the All County Chorus four times and participating in NYSSMA twice where he received high scores. Around the same time, he began playing trumpet. After two years in the school band, Matthew abandoned the trumpet and picked up a guitar. He has been playing guitar and writing songs since the age of 11 and performing live since the age of 13.
Having recieved a certficiate in Studio Recording Technologies from Nassau Community College, Matthew has a knowledge and understanding of recording and live sound. He leads the band Nifty Breed, an alternative rock power trio that has garnered praise throughout the East Coast and Mid-West and opened for the likes of Smile Empty Soul, Local H, and CKY. Matthew owns two Reverend guitars (a Sensei HB-FM and a Kingbolt RA) strung up with D’Addario strings, a Marshall JCM2000 DSL100 and has quite an impressive pedal board.
Now in his 15th year with Sam Ash Music. Matt DJ’d throughout High School and College to help him pay for recording gear. Saxophone, Trumpet, Clarinet, and French horn player who is familiar with most Band and Orchestral instruments. Matt’s a terrible drummer who loves electronic drums, because they’re easier to fix in software. Keyboards, drum machines, samplers, multi-track recorders and sequencers are his favorites, but he’s comfortable with most DAW’s. If it’s got buttons, Matt has pushed them.

After picking up the guitar in high school, Nick has been involved in music ever since. He has played throughout Florida in his local band, and is always working on writing and recording music for whatever project he has stumbled upon at the moment. With experience in recording, live sound, bass, drums, and keyboards as well as guitar, Nick is happy to help with any customer’s questions or needs.
I would like to single Nick out for outstanding service. If I could hire this young man I would. He should be an example to everyone working customer service at Sam Ash how to treat your customers. In this age of voicemail and terrible manners from most retailers Nick was a breath of fresh air.

Shawon “Plays ‘til Dawn” Turner is a 12-year veteran of the saxophone and Sam Ash’s resident hepcat. Nursed on the horny stylings of one John William Coltrane, Shawon has blown both horns and minds throughout the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn where he performs in local college bands. A former student of Queensborough College, Shawon went on to work at Sam Ash Music in Manhattan, and then as manager of the Band and Orchestral department at the Sam Ash Music store in Forest Hills, New York. Currently, he is teaching his 5-year old son Eli to play alto saxophone. We’ve managed to keep this cat cozy for 11 years, but we live in constant fear for the day he packs up his Conn 1948 “Naked Lady” baritone sax and leaves us for the big time. Until then, get on your horn and call Shawon for a be-boppin’ deal on all things band and orchestral.
Email Shawon with any questions about band and orchestral instruments!
