Martin HD-28: Quick Look

Announced at Winter NAMM 2018, the reimagined Standard Series from Martin Guitars is the result of a company looking to modernize while at the same time honoring their rich history. Today we take a look at the Standard Series HD-28.

History
Around 1944, Martin started using non-scalloped bracing on the D-28. This was done to accommodate players who played aggressively in order to be heard in a world without amplifiers. It also helped the tops of the guitars stand up to the heavy gauge strings used at the time. Fast forward to the 1970s, a time when players were using lighter gauge strings and weren’t playing nearly as hard. Instead of changing the bracing of the D-28, Martin decided to roll out a new model and the HD-28 was born. Let’s take a closer look at the new Standard Series HD-28.

Construction
The HD-28 features a Sitka Spruce top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides. Ebony is used for the fingerboard and bridge. The neck is made of select hardwood and features a solid headstock with an East Indian Rosewood headplate, square taper and a volute on the back. The neck features a modified low oval profile with a high performance taper. Bone is used for the nut and saddle, which is compensated to ensure proper intonation. With scalloped, forward shifted X-Bracing, you will find the HD-28 produces great lows and mids.

Vintage Look
Aesthetically, Martin has added aging toner to the Sitka Spruce top, giving the HD-28 a more vintage look. Setting this guitar apart from others in the line is the eye-catching herringbone top inlay that the HD-28 is known for. If you turn the guitar over, you will find an equally impressive zig-zag inlay down the back of the instrument. On the headstock you will find open gear tuners and a script overlay of the old style Martin logo. A beveled and polished tortoiseshell pick guard and lovely abalone fingerboard inlays help to tie this instrument together.
