Sam Ash Music is pleased to introduce a set of five exquisite, unique custom-built acoustic-electrics from Taylor Guitars. In March 2016, the Sam Ash guitar team, including Sammy Ash (COO), John Conley (Guitar Buyer/Product Manager), Ben Ash (Regional Manager) and Danielle Shapiro (Copywriter/Product Specialist), set out to El Cajon, California to the Taylor factory and hand-selected extraordinary tonewoods from Andy Powers’ personal wood library to create the ultimate set of fine custom instruments for the Sam Ash Guitars of Distinction collection. The members of the Sam Ash team were honored to have private access to some of the most exclusive tonewoods ever available. The Sam Ash team, all of whom are guitar players themselves, went through numerous sets of tonewoods until they found five sets that were truly exceptional. Once the tonewoods were selected, the Sam Ash team spent many weeks deliberating and meticulously selecting every fine detail of each instrument. From body shapes, neck carves and bracings to visual touches including inlays, bindings and rosettes, all of the appointments the Sam Ash team decided on were selected to complement each instrument, both sonically and visually.

We believe that this exclusive set of custom guitars will cover any sound, any playing style and any desire that a true collector and player would want as a centerpiece of their guitar collection. Each guitar in this custom collection comes complete with hardshell case and a signed copy of Bob Taylor’s book, Guitar Lessons: A Life’s Journey Turning Passion into Business. Each book has been personally signed by Bob Taylor himself and Taylor master luthier Andy Powers.

Along the way, the Sam Ash guitar team was guided by none other than Taylor master builder Andy Powers. Check out these five Taylor Custom Shop creations, and see what one of the best luthiers in the business has to say about each one.

Custom Shop Grand Orchestra AA Quilt Maple/Bearclaw Spruce Acoustic-Electric Guitar (SN:1105236123)

WHAT MASTER LUTHIER ANDY POWERS HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS GUITAR
“This guitar is all about drama. The super responsive GO body shape, built here with a Florentine cutaway is a hugely dynamic presence. The quilted maple and bearclaw Sitka spruce add their own subplot to this guitar’s visual story line. The most immediately grabbing aspect is the transparent black finish punctuated with the curly maple armrest and trimmings. It’s an arresting stage guitar, with a sonic complexity to back up its commanding presence.”

Custom Shop Grand Auditorium Figured Mahogany/Engelmann Spruce Acoustic-Electric (SN:1105096124)

WHAT MASTER LUTHIER ANDY POWERS HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS GUITAR
“This cutaway Grand Auditorium guitar is a fun juxtaposition of warm and organic sonic response, in a crisply modern setting. The wood binding details, curly mahogany, and creamy Engelmann spruce are balanced by visual sharpness of the florentine cutaway. This cutaway allows superb upper note access while the GA shape helps form a balanced response across the whole fingerboard.”

Custom Shop Grand Auditorium Milagro Brazilian Rosewood/Premium Adirondack Spruce Acoustic-Electric Guitar (SN: 1105106126)

WHAT MASTER LUTHIER ANDY POWERS HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS GUITAR
“This guitar deserves to live on the top shelf, yet it will sound so good, it can’t be allowed to gather dust there. This instrument, whose back and sides are constructed of Brazilian rosewood from famed Milagro, or Miracle tree, paired with super high-grade Adirondack is a fantastic representation of modern Lutherie. The tone is deep, complex, and responsive, blooming as each note decays. It makes the sort of notes a musician savors. Wood of this caliber deserves the lavish attention to detail spent on this guitar.”

Custom Shop Grand Concert 12-Fret AA Walnut/Torrefied Spruce Acoustic-Electric Guitar (SN:1105096121)

WHAT MASTER LUTHIER ANDY POWERS HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS GUITAR
“This guitar has sweetness for days. Or generations. The unique combination of walnut’s dry warmth with the open clarity of torrefied spruce lends itself to many playing styles, but is likely best appreciated by a fingerstyle player looking for a pure and clean voice. In the framework of a 12-fret Grand Concert, this guitar will speak easily with the most delicate touch, yet be able to handle a full hand of power just as well.”

Custom Shop Grand Symphony Cocobolo/Premium Adirondack Spruce Acoustic-Electric Guitar (SN:1105106125)

WHAT MASTER LUTHIER ANDY POWERS HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS GUITAR
“This particular guitar, with its cocobolo back and sides mixed with an Adirondack spruce top has a strong, vibrant personality, echoed by the bold colors and dramatic figure on the wood and curly maple trim. The Adirondack spruce contributes to a very high volume ceiling and powerful attack, while the cocobolo helps put extra emphasis on the upper register harmonics, making for an extra high fidelity response.”
