All of us at Sam Ash were saddened to hear of the passing of Everett “Vic” Firth this past Sunday. While many are familiar with drumsticks that bear his name, Firth was an accomplished percussionist and spent more than 40 years as the principle tympanist of the Boston Symphony. Dissatisfied with the quality of available drum sticks, Firth took matters into his own hands, designing sticks that brought out the best sound of the instrument. Soon other drummers began to inquire about his sticks and in 1963 he launched Vic Firth, Inc.

The company currently produces over 12 million drumsticks and mallets a year. His sticks are used by such artists as Questlove, Charlie Watts, Gary Burton and Omar Hakim.
